Wedding Cake Tip #5 - Coordinate the Design with your Decorations

Many couples not only choose wedding cakes that meet their personalities taste-wise, but also cakes that match their theme or wedding décor. For example, a cake covered in flakes of coconut might go well with an exotic or tropical wedding theme. It might also have flavorings that include pineapple or macadamia nuts. And if the bride has used splashes of color in her wedding ensemble, she may ask for the same color in icing flowers to match everything. Regardless of color or embellishment, it is true that you might choose to coordinate the design with your decorations.

For banquet halls that have been decorated with plain white streamers, the cake may be a subtle white design as well. To to make the cake stand out, though, add strands of white edible pearls. Not only will the cake look spectacular, but it will also be very elegant and dainty.

Another way to coordinate the wedding cake design with the decorations is by choosing flowers that are the same or similar to the bridal bouquets that the women carry. If the exact flowers are used and they are not edible, the baker will use either plastic blooms to adorn the cake or if she is very talented, she will make the exact flowers from edible art. Some wedding cake designers are so good at creating flowers, you cannot tell the difference between real and icing when looking at the cake. Plus, a lot of people enjoy getting the gooey part of the cake so having icing flowers can be a bonus.

Fondant can be transformed into many designs, and is used quite craftily to sculpt custom ribbons, bows, and other decorations on the cake to match the wedding theme. And the use of colors can be as large as the rainbow. It is recommended, though, that you bring a swatch of whatever you want to match so that the baker or designer can make a hue as close as possible to your choice.

Further, the cake itself may be a significant part of the overall theme. For example, keeping with the exotic theme, maybe the cake is a little village or house surrounded by palm trees, pretty sand, and water. Today, many people have incorporated their pets or children into their wedding cakes. Since rules are not as strict now with the design of the cake, personalizations and whimsy are becoming quite popular.
